This is a great album! I first heard about はっぴえんど when I visited a used record store in Tokyo as a college student in the 80's. YMO was very popular by that time. I believe that this group of songs can be compared to many contemporary classic rock albums of the era. Still, songs like 風を集めて and 夏なんです are very typical of J-Pop songs of the era, but are great. All of the songs, including these, are very poetic. Diversity in styles of the songs and writers is very noticeable. 空いろのくれよん, for example, sounds like a country music classic. The falsetto あしたてんきになあれ is a treat. 颱風 is a brilliant departure from J-Pop and this style might be found on a Bob Dylan album of the era. Also, the variation of the kanji is brilliant. 愛餓を reminded me of the song "Her Majesty" on the Beatles album, "Abbey Road." I wonder if that is what they were trying to copy. It is almost too much of a coincidence. You should buy this album and read through the lyrics and the interesting changes in kanji, to fully understand how brilliant it truly is.
